Robert Blaak • Village Galleries Maui

Robert Blaak was born in the Netherlands in 1967. After graduating from college in 1988 with a degree in business, Robert took some time off to travel the globe windsurfing. In the early 90’s his passion for this sport led him to leave the business world behind and follow his heart to Maui.

After making Maui his home, Robert discovered his interest and talent for woodworking which evolved into a new career path. He started creating authentically styled canoe paddles and jewelry boxes and became a featured artist with Village Galleries in Lahaina and Kapalua.  His latest works include a series of striking koa tables which are showcased at Village Galleries at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.

Robert’s thoughtful selection of the most uniquely patterned “curly” koa has become his signature. To the Hawaiian, koa was considered a blessing, providing massive trunks which were carved into magnificent canoes, without comparison in the Pacific. Once abundant, this magical wood which grows only in Hawaii, is treasured and sought after for it’s beauty and rarity.
